Sweet Turkey Chili with Kidney Beans

Mmmm chili. It’s one of those meals that I don’t make often enough, but when I do, it just hits the spot.

It’s also a dish that never tastes exactly the same as last time I made it. I add spices as I go, and in the span of four hours, who knows how much of anything I can throw into the pot.

The basis of my chili consists of ground white turkey, canned tomatoes, chili powder, onions, chicken stock, brown sugar, and barbeque sauce. I already had most of the ingredients on hand, but overall, the entire meal would have set me back about $10.

I have rough estimates down for that last chili I made, but like I said, flavor the food as you go and you should be satisfied with the outcome.

Ingredients for 4:

  • 1 ½ pound ground white turkey
  • 1 28-ounce can peeled whole tomatoes
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons barbeque sauce (I use Sticky Fingers Carolina Classic)
  • 1 white onion, chopped
  • 6 cups chicken stock
  • 2 to 4 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 can beans (kidney or chili), washed and drained
  • Cayenne and cumin
  • Olive oil

In a large pot on medium-high heat, add some olive oil. Cook the onions for a few minutes, then add the ground turkey. Break apart and cook thoroughly. Add the tomatoes and chicken stock. Break apart the tomatoes and add the spices, brown sugar, and barbeque sauce. Bring to boil and then simmer for three to four hours until it reaches your desired consistency.

Add the beans within the last hour.

I served mine immediately with Serrano cornbread muffins.
