Baked Ziti with Italian Sausage

This recipe has always been a favorite of mine, and it’s a quick go-to when I have extra ground meat in the fridge.

I love cooking with things I already have on hand, and here was a prime example of such. Luckily I had extra basil leftover, but I would have still made the dish if I didn’t have it. The whole meal is just comforting, warm, and VERY filling.

Ingredients for 4:

  • ½ pound ziti
  • ½  to 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 2 Italian sausage links, uncased
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • ½ cup dried breadcrumbs
  • ½ small onion, diced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 6 to 8 fresh basil leaves (optional)
  • Olive oil
  • Italian seasoning
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons sugar
  • Salt and pepper
  • Garlic salt

Cook pasta according to the directions. Drain and set aside.

In a medium saucepan, add some olive oil and cook the garlic and onions for a few minutes. Add the sausage. Break apart into smaller pieces as it cooks.

When cooked thoroughly, add tomato sauce and seasonings. Bring to a slight boil then simmer. Taste for extra seasonings.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Add the cooked pasta to the tomato sauce. Mix well. Divide the ziti evenly between four oven-safe dinner bowls or into one 8 by 8-inch baking dish.

Sprinkle on the mozzarella and then the breadcrumbs.

Bake for 25 minutes and top with fresh torn basil.

Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
